Because I am on Windows 7 sections of the link provided by Andre did not entirely apply. But it gave me some things to look at. One thing that the logs on my machine pointed to was a missing config.ini. I "fixed" this by copying the preferences.ini into a config.ini file. I also used the repair feature on the VMWare application even though it encouraged me to just reinstall.
